Overview

Team profile

Eczacibasi VitrA qualified for the World Club Championship by defeating Italian side Unendo Yamamay Busto Arsizio 3-0 to win the 2015 European Champions League. Their success at the tournament included many fine individual performances by the likes of Jordan Larsen-Burbach (Most Valuable Player), Gulden Kuzubasioglu (Best Libero) and Bethania De La Cruz De Pena (Best Outside Spiker).

The Istanbul-based club’s history in European competitions dates back to their second place in the 1980 European Champions League. Their only previous continental trophy was the 1999 European Cup Winners Cup. Eczacibasi VitrA have qualified for the Final Four of the Champions League several times since 2001, but failed to finish higher than fourth until their 2015 victory. They have won the Turkish national league 28 times, including 17 consecutive wins beginning in the 1972/73 season, and won all of their eight national cups between 1999 and 2012.

One of Eczacibasi VitrA's most notable squads was the 1980 team that finished second in the European Champions League. Their achievements coincided with the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Turkish Republic's founder, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, and the team became known as 'The Daughters of Ataturk'.
